Joining the Lab

✨I will be recruiting Ph.D. students for the 2024–2025 cycle.✨

The theme for my lab will be "Language Generative AI". I am not looking for students who will work on specific topics. Rather, I am looking for students who will drive their own research agendas and do impactful work, which can be on any topics as long as they are related to language, generative AI, or both.

I am looking for students who (1) have a strong foundation in CS, ML, NLP, and coding, (2) are highly motivated, enthusiastic, and independent, (3) are communicative and collaborative, and (4) are critical thinkers with an open mind. I also place great importance on ethics (both in work and social contexts) and diversity.

If you are interested in joining my lab:
  • If you are at/accepted to UC Berkeley EECS Ph.D. program: Please feel free to reach out!
  • If you are applying to the Ph.D. program: Thank you for your interest! I will take Ph.D. students through UC Berkeley EECS - please refer to the department's admission page for details.
The best way is to select me as a potential advisor on your application form AND to mention my name in the final paragraph of your Statement of Purpose. I will make sure to read all applications that mention my name.
I apologize for not being able to respond to individual emails or schedule meetings due to the high volume of requests I receive. Please do not interpret this as a lack of interest!
  • If you are a M.S. student, a postdoc, or a visiting student: At the moment, I do not plan to take a M.S. student, a postdoc, or a visiting student.
  • If you are an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley EECS: I will post the formal process in Fall 2025 on how to apply to my lab - please check back later.
  • If you are a student outside of UC Berkeley EECS: I regularly receive emails from amazing students around the world who are interested in working with me, and I truly appreciate this interest. Unfortunately, due to my limited capacity, I can only advise UC Berkeley students. I apologize in advance as I may be unable to respond to these inquiries.

If you have questions about my research and/or papers: Thank you for your interest in our work! Please feel free to email me, and I will make sure to read it and get back to you. If I do not respond within two weeks, please feel free to send a reminder email. For papers that I am not a first author, it is best to email the first author and cc me.

If you are looking for feedback on your research and/or papers: Thank you for your willingness to share your work with me! Please feel free to email me, and I will do my best to provide feedback when my schedule permits.

If you are looking for feedback on your Ph.D. application: I apologize, but to maintain fairness, I am unable to provide feedback on your Ph.D. application. I recommend checking out student-led programs for providing feedback on application materials (e.g., the one in UC Berkeley EECS) and this student-led website that compiles SoPs from past CS Ph.D. applications.

Do not cold-email me for startup ventures, consulting, or paid mentoring. I do not read or respond to such inqueries.
